Never Leave Me [Norrington/Elizabeth, POTC: AWE]

« previous entry | next entry »
Jun. 11th, 2007 | 10:13 pm

Title: Never Leave Me

Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean

Pairing(s): Norrington/Elizabeth; shred of Sparrington, even smaller speck of Barbossabeth, and obligatory background Willabeth in equally small dosage

Spoilers: All three movies, AWE-focused.

Rating: PG-13

Genre: romance/angst

Summary: Day and night, she sees him.

Notes: At some point there was a complete loss of story and characters; almost writing themselves, and Jack would not keep quiet (thus more Sparrington than I thought; it’s my other favorite POTC couple, after all). Credit to commodore_lydia for feedback on a plotbunny, and inspiration from a slew of DMC fics, such as "Perhaps" by jadeddiva. Pretty sure I just lifted a Buffy episode title. (Love Buffy!)  AU I guess.

A shot rings out, and as she falls, a heart falls along with her, but its descent does not stop and float up like she does; it falls and settles at the bottom of the ocean, crying.

&&&&&&

His taste lingers on her lips, spreads from head to toe; it will not disappear with time, this feeling of warmth fighting off the chill.

&&&&&&

She sees him everywhere.

James is there on the Singaporean ship minutes after she saw him struck down; her head is still on its shoulders when choosing to surreptitiously check if he is real or not, ghosting fingers on his persona, which drift inevitably straight through nothing at all. She continues to be as surreptitious with all the other never-ending mirages; she keeps her madness private.

James is there on the back of her eyelids when sleeping, or awake and blinking. He is there lighting the way to Shipwreck Cove, she sees him ambling ahead of them on pirate-filled docks and streets. He is there in the Brethren Court, peeking behind Jack and Barbossa, already looking at Teague seconds before he rang out his introductory shot. She sees him lean against the grand table, pouring over the Code; she sees him open up his jacket to reveal the bloody hole, and she beseeches everyone to give the Company Hell, though in more eloquent and persuasive terms. He is back on the Pearl, and she sees him ahead of them on the sandbar, always ahead of her when walking, always seeing his back. James is there through the driving rain, untouchable in the storm; she sees him point behind whenever an enemy tries her guard. When Will proposes he gestures to Barbossa, and she complies, heart rushing at the thought of the older pirate; he points toward Will, the first mirage to lose calm and look frantic, frantically grabbing her attention, frantically showing her the way to Husband. He is frantic still when she gets to Will, his eyes screaming warning at her. They cloud over mournfully as she feels Will’s blood on her hands, convulse against him. Unable to heed James, unable, useless, useless, useless girl.

She sees James’ eyes light up at Jack’s approach, his hand over the pirate’s above the dagger hilt. He is already there motioning for abandon ship, and this time Jack is more willing to heed than she; he is not in the miraculous sky with them, but on the deck of their escape, waving them in for a safe landing. She sees him beside Jack, a soothing presence to his gnawing concern; James is confident of this battle’s end. She sees his eyes shadow, his mouth form words of mercy for the Endeavor, its crew, its living breathing men; and she in turn mouths a reply of nay, all of them must die, accompany their damned master, undeserving of a chance to surrender.

On the beach James is in Will’s eyes, shrunk down to size and watching.

Even with Jack and Will and Barbossa and everyone else gone, she still sees James. He wanders Shipwreck Cove along with her, continues to walk ahead even as she waddles, her feet steadily disappearing from sight when she cares to look down. He is there when she is flat on her back, everything on fire, sweat pooling down; Jack and Barbossa return, lined up next to James, Teague on the other side and farther way, carefully observing and directing when needed, but it is all in the ladies’ hands. For a moment James break eye contact with her—he had been staring at her ever since the leak started—looking through the walls; he turns to her, breaks this mirage’s vow of silence, telling her there are more outside, anxiously waiting. She actually sees him smile as they hear Pintel finally snap about Poppet from the hallway, and Ragetti try to calm him; hear Gibbs curse and Marty grumble as Murtogg and Mullroy begin to argue about some pregnant concept; hear the parrot and monkey chatter with a vengeance.

Then there is an explosion, she gasps for air and closes her eyes and James is not there. Her eyes snap open and he is still not there; her vision spirals around the room but he is not hiding, and it as if the corset is back on and she is gasping, gasping, choking, no air, none at all, where is he

"Calm down lass, yer must be calm—"

"It’s almost over Lizzy—"

"Just one more push, my King—"

Something slips out, and it sounds like her heart has returned, for it is still crying. She is slumped against the pillow for a time immeasurable to her understanding; all is foggy and muted, except for the crying and a sharp clear gasp from Jack that means nothing to her. The bundle in her arms, she cannot describe its gender, but her question goes unspoken and is answered immediately; strong lass, says Barbossa—she will be Katherine—and her baby girl is beautiful, from the little she sees of her, even her eyes are already open.

Green eyes that left Elizabeth for only an instance only to return again, always faithful and never leaving her alone for too long, not since that shot.

"Lizzy, Lizzy, Lizzy—"

Just a tuft of dark brown hair now, but her baby girl’s hair will grow long and wild and complement the green, will never know white and blue confinement, will never know mud and dirt and blood.

"Lizzy, Lizzy, Lizzy—"

And there is James as she had known him broken and wretched and alive; opened her eyes to the man, for how could he not get her attention when raging at the world and himself, sneering at her? As intoxicated as she had been, she omitting the fact of her still retained virtue until, until—

"Elizabeth Swann!" Jack finally has her undivided attention, and everyone else’s, staring, fixated as if on the Pearl going down again with the Kraken. When James disappears and their daughter wails, she gives up on his life....

"Where is the William, where is the William!? Jus’ like him, jus’ like him, not Will, but Jamie." Never seen Jack so frantic, grief breaking free and running wild, mind cracking and splintering away for all to see. "Can’t call her Turner, don’t you dare cover this up!" Jack looks fit to choke her should he be denied. "Has to know her daddy, has to, has to, has to—" Kohl edge pleading eyes. "All we have left, all that’s left of Jamie, she’s all we have left—"

…There is always his legacy.

Good but I don't understand the ending... Jack is angry and the baby is James'?

First up, the question with the short answer: yes, the baby's is James; I've read some DMC fic where he and Lizzy were intimate on the Pearl while heading to Isla Cruces for Davy's chest.

Jack's reaction is a lil' more complicated; Jack is only angry at Lizzy, now thinking that she knew all along who the father was, and had planned to keep it secret and say it was Will's--in Jack's mind, that would smack of disrespecting James' memory. Jack's happy with the kid (truthfully, rather overjoyed it's James', that there is some shred of the man left--though that relief is kinda overwhelming, hence his crazed reaction); though the kid also breaks some walls around Jack's grief over James' death, again, hence his reaction in the story.

I like the twist at the end, and Jack's reaction. I love the idea that James' child should not be hidden, and pretend to be something else, because he deserves to be remembered and have a legacy. Brilliant!

Thanks so much.

James' child with Elizabeth--well, it's an overarching idea I've had since watching AWE: would've been nice that after the colossal shaft James got in the movie, that he got the final, ultimate compensation--that Jack may've kissed her, Will may've married her, but Elizabeth has James' daughter. James gets a legacy (with Will as FD captain and assuming with "aqua de vida", that everyone else gets to live forever, he deserves a legacy XP).

*That, and there's this actress I always picture as the grown-up version of James' kid.

... WOW, that was amazing. I loved Jack at the end. I cant tell if hes frantic because he is angry at Lizzy for having James' child or if hes frantic because the only part of James left in the world was given to Elizabeth and not to him. I would be mighty jelous and angry too if that was the situation. I love the first line, I read it, and was taken back and out powerful it was. I felt really heavy like i coudnt breath. Good job!

Jack wouldn't be angry at Lizzy for having James' child, because he likes James (and under happier circumstances a.k.a. alive!James circumstances, he would've crowed over a "Norrington baby"). He's more, uh--well, this has inspired me to do more of a prequel on Jack's reaction to the news of James' death, but to the point--Jack's only let himself grieved once in private (with a lot of rum and broken rum bottles and a bitters cheers to the dearly departed Commodore) about James, and probably since the Big Damn Battle and during Lizzy's pregnancy been on a frustrating search for a way to revive James, and been reaching dead end after dead end...and with the realization that Lizzy's baby is James', because Jack would just know who the daddy was by the baby's obvious resemblance to him alone, neither Will or Lizzy--well, with that Jack's snapped and just soaking in the fact that James is dead.

Also, he know whole-heartedly believes that Lizzy knew who the father was all along, and had been intending to hide it, and that makes him more than a little angry. Another thing; the news of some remnant of James is left is a bit overwhelming to Jack.

So, uh, in summary:

1) Jack has been keeping his grief over James' death quiet, but now with the sudden realization that Lizzy's kid is James', not Will's, he's kinda letting all the grief fall out.
2) Mad at Elizabeth, thinking she knew who the father was all along and planned to hide it.
3) Idea of James living on in his daughter is a notion overwhelming in its relief.

(Please excuse long response. ^^;)

Oh, wow. I had to read the ending twice to really, really get it to sink in that this had some Sparrington undertones to it! I should have read the header more carefully.

The ending is absolutely wonderful. Jack's insistence -- "has to know her daddy" -- wow. Beautiful work.

Wow. Just ... wow. I love this so indescribably much, I can't even start to count the ways in which this story is amazing.

I love how Elizabeth sees James everywhere.
I love how James tries to help her.
I love how Jack reacts.
I love Katherine.
I especially love the resolve of the Paternity issue ;)

Has to know her daddy, has to, has to, has to- Room for a sequel? ;)

This is just awesome!

I really wanted you to see this fic, since I discussed the plotbunny with you before, even showed you example pics.... (I was waiting to see if you'd find it on norribeth; if not, I was gonna comment somewhere on your lj.)

Sequel? Think so, hard to organize some thoughts; going back right now to do a short version on Jack's reaction to news of James' death; then Jack playing with baby Katherine. Maybe one of them following the pattern of all post-AWE fix-it fic: James does return. (You have no idea how many different stories I'm coming up with Katherine--just Kate when she's older, she prefers it better; in fact, seriously considering doing some kind of 5 things with Kate just to get some of those ideas out in the open...but it wouldn't all be about the oc, there'd be plenty of canon POTC characters--certainly, more of a way to showcase 5 things that could've happened to James and Lizzy, their daugther at the center of it.)

And y'know, Jack was very persistent, and Kate was like this is how you can try me out, provide a little twist to thist one-shot--because this was just going to be about how Elizabeth kept seeing James everywhere after he died. But then that plotbunny poured over; I began thinking of Lizzy finally seeing James...in her baby, her daughter, thus James is the father, and maybe part of her seeing him everywhere was her subconscious/conscious knowledge of the father's identity. Not only my plotbunny tries itself out, I can practice in the age-old literary trick of the plot twist.

PLEASE keep me up-to-date on this cycle! (You can always drop me a line at my Journal, ya know.)

YEs, I know you've heard this, but bring James back! We can have Elizabeth and Kate and Jack all go out swashbuckling and save James from the OtherWorld and then we can have Daddy!James! ... Just a thought ;)

You write Jack very well - I admire you! I can't write Jack to save my life!

Hmmm, that's a good point - seeing James everywhere as a subconscious manifestation of paternity ... Never would have thought of that! And, lastly, excellent use of the plot-twist!

Oh, writing Jack terrifies so very much; it helped that when writing him, I tried doing a small dosage of him, keep it small (and it helps that my opinion of Jack being a closet-Norrington fan manifested itself somehow, I'm sure).

Oh goodness. That was a bit heart-wrenching. I'm very picky about my Norribeth, but this was awesome. The way that she saw James everywhere was so sad and then when the child turned out to be his? *tears* But what really got me was when Jack finally had to face up to the fact that James was gone (I'm a rabid Sparrington shipper), zomg. *sobs*

Ooh, yes, a Sparrington shipper's perspective (do you think I should post this to the sparrington comm. sometime). Uh huh, Jack just breaks down when it's revealed the child is James', lets out all that grief he kept bottled up (I swear, Jack was pretty much unplanned; he wrote himself along with the baby plotbunny).

Umm..so I had to read it three times to understand fully what was going on...but I cried every single time.

You can blame me damn woman's period if you like- I blame the utter brutal beauty that is this fic, and I'm memming it. Because it is LOVE. Up until this point I've been resisting James/Lizzie set 'after the fact' (because I knew it would be sad and part of me still likes to deny it happened), but you dragged me into this with the Barbossabeth (and it was gorgeous in it's tiny existence)!

Very well written- the fact that it was quite cryptic adds to it I think, gives it a dizziness. *hearts you*

the fact that it was quite cryptic adds to it I think, gives it a dizziness. That's coherent wording of one of the qualities I tried to write in the fic, thanks for that (I really couldn't word it right, just did it.)
